When Wavetronix was founded, the traffic detection industry was in a difficult place. The drawbacks of inductive loops were becoming more and more apparent – their intrusive nature meant they could be challenging and disruptive to install and maintain, and they provided low reliability in areas where the road surface was likely to change or degrade.

Companies came up with non-intrusive replacements for loops, mainly cameras and some radar devices, that promised the accuracy of loops with higher reliability and much easier installation and maintenance.  There were problems, however, as it became clear that these sensors simply did not function the way they should: traffic cameras had accuracy issues based on the fact that camera lenses are easily obscured; radar detectors used off-the-shelf radars that couldn’t stand up to the rigors of traffic detection.  Millions of dollars of public money were spent on technology that just didn’t work.

This is the environment Wavetronix found itself in at its founding. Traffic professionals were weary of any non-intrusive devices because they had been burned by them before. No one wants to spend public money on new, unproven technology only to have it fail.  

At first, Wavetronix found itself on the defensive, trying to convince departments of transportation that this radar technology, built from the ground up for vehicle detection, performed as advertised. In the years following, dozens of third-party studies and tens of thousands of real-world installations have proven Wavetronix to be the gold standard in traffic detection.  

Today, a glut of Wavetronix imitations has appeared. Words that Wavetronix uses as definitions for technology it invented, like HD radar, Radar Vision, and dynamic ETA, have become marketing buzz words for others. They claim to perform as well as Wavetronix at a lower price point, but we see, time and again, these imitators fail.
